Abstract

T. H. White’s The Once and Future King tetralogy (1958) is one of the most remarkable rewritings of the Arthurian legend in the twentieth century, not only for the exhaustiveness and originality with which it treats the Matter of Britain, but also for having inspired numerous works in different media. Among its most noteworthy aspects are the dialogue with the sources, the crossover between history and literature and the handling of time. Through the contributions of comparatism and neomedievalism, we intend to seek categories that will allow us to rethink the Middle Ages as a construct in this and other neomedieval productions. In this work, we enter into the text through the analysis of the treatment of temporality based on a classification along four axes: totalising contextualisation, narrative devices, intertextuality and anachronisms, and magical distortions. We will also examine how the cyclical conception of temporality and the contrast between periods collaborate with the aim of criticising wartime.
