Abstract

The motivation for this dossier is speculative, given that, although historical comparison should be key in literary studies, it has recently been marginalized. The distrust of a far-reaching literary historiography is due in part to the crisis of European humanist universalism and the influence of postcolonialism, which has promoted a caution against large-scale historical narratives. Cultural, archival, and empirical-materialist turns in the humanities have transformed literary historiography, imposing a radical contextualism that has limited the ability to connect the past with the present. However, since the beginning of the 21st century, attempts have emerged to reconsider literary history, incorporating global perspectives and digital tools. This dossier seeks to examine the possibility of comparing literary phenomena from different periods, exploring literary practices, forms and systems. As an example, dissidence in literature is analyzed by comparing works by Miguel de Unamuno, Miguel Espinosa and Cristina Morales.
