Authority and the Right to Philosophy

This text examines the concept of authority within the framework of the problem posed by Derrida regarding the right to philosophy. The issue of authority is linked, on the one hand, to political implications (such as the creation of realities and institutionalization) and, on the other, to a strong tension with the concept of power, often understood as inherently conflictual. The text explores both dimensions of authority and their connection to the need for defining what can guarantee a right (of institutional and political order) to philosophy. To this end, the concept of authority is reviewed in contrast to the idea of power, drawing on H. Arendt’s thought, along with its implications for institutional frameworks. In a second section, Derrida’s approach to the “right to philosophy” and its fraught relationship with institutionalization is revisited. The text concludes with a brief examination of Kant’s notion of right to provide closure to the discussion.
