Doubles, Dubbing, Duplicity: Gender, Motherhood, and Other Monstrosities in Contemporary Spanish Literature

This paper explores the figurations of the double in contemporary Spanish narrative, focusing on their connections to gender and the monstrous. Through the prism of the fantastic, the ominous, and the spectral, the “double” appears as a splitting of identity, a rift in subjectivity, and a crisis of the boundaries between the real and the imaginary. From the Romantic tradition of the Doppelgänger to its current reformulations, the feminine becomes a space of resistance, disobedience, and monstrosity. In this sense, the narratives analyzed operate in various cultural displacements and translations—dubbings and foldings—that expand the notion of duplicity and allow us to interpret the fissures of the female subject in tension with domesticity, desire, and motherhood. Through authors such as Sánchez Portero in Habitaciones con monstruos (2017), Soledad Puértolas with “Espejos” (2010) and Katixa Agirre with Las madres no (2019), the article shows how monstrous duplicity becomes an aesthetic and political strategy to make visible dissident bodies, voices and subjectivities, turning the double into a way of questioning gender, memory and the limits of representation in recent Spanish literature.
