The Epistolary Self-Configuration of an Avant-Garde

This article examines the epistolary collection gathered in Borges, cartas a Godel (2024) as a space of epistolary self-figuration in which the young Jorge Luis Borges constructs an emerging writerly identity during his first European journey. Drawing on the eight surviving letters, the study focuses on three key moments: his years in Geneva as a period of aesthetic formation and encounter with German Expressionism; his stay in Spain as a moment of insertion into the Ultraist avant-garde; and his return to Buenos Aires as an opportunity to reread the journey and transform the city into poetic material. The correspondence operates as a discursive laboratory in which Borges fictionalizes his own experience and sketches the foundations of his future literary voice. The recent compilation of the letters into a single volume makes it possible to read them as an organic whole and opens new perspectives for understanding the genesis of Borges’s early aesthetic project.
